Mrs. Cunningham’s Lesson Plans for May 18-21, 2020

Monday 5-18-20

Today is Virtual Field Trip Day!

We are going to take a virtual field trip to Cathedral Caverns since we missed our field trip due to the coronavirus.  Cathedral Caverns is about 1 hour from us and is a wonderful place to visit.

Important vocabulary words:

Stalactite: tapering structure hanging like an icicle from the roof of a cave, formed of calcium salts deposited by dripping water

Stalagmite: a structure rising from the floor of a cave, formed of calcium salts deposited by dripping water

Column:  formed when stalagmites and stalactites meet

Stalactites hang from the ceiling; stalagmites rise from the ground. As long as you remember what c and g mean in those words, you will never confuse them!

Cathedral Caverns actually holds 6 world records.  Please read these before watching the video.

*Cathedral Caverns has the widest entrance of any commercial cave in the world. It is 25 feet tall and 128 feet wide.

*Cathedral Caverns is home to "Goliath"--the largest stalagmite in the world. It measures 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumstance.

*Cathedral Caverns has the largest flowstone wall, which is 32 feet tall and 135 feet long.

*Cathedral Caverns is known for the largest "frozen" waterfall.

*Cathedral Caverns has the largest stalagmite forest of any cave in the world.

*Cathedral Caverns has the most improbable formation in the world which is a stalagmite that is 35 feet tall and 3 inches wide!

Please watch this video to see a short tour through the caverns:
